EP 409 Applied Solid State Physics (Autumn 2016-17)
Instructor Name: S.S Major
Course Type: Honours / Elective
Pre-requisites: Introduction to Condensed Matter Physics (informal)
Course Content: The course covers the beyond chapter 8 of Ashcroft and Mermin. Focus is on bandstructure calculations, Boltzmann transport theory, Semiconductors in Magnetic fields, Fermi surfaces.
Books: Solid State Physics, Ashcroft and Mermin
Lectures: The lectures were very informative. The instructor took effort in explaining the concepts. Slides were used.
Attendance Policy: None
Assignments: There were 5 assignments which were included in the grading. The assignments were easy and were an extension of concepts covered in class.
Exams and Grading:2 Quizzes with 10% weightage.
Advanced Follow-up Courses: Introduction to Low-temperature Physics, Semiconductor Physics
Pro-Tips: Take this to increase your knowledge of condensed matter physics beyond the introductory level. Very useful if going into experimental condensed matter since many characterisation techniques (Hall measurement, SdH oscillations) are covered in this course theoretically.
Note that the course does not cover modern CMP concepts such as second quantized models. For that, Theoretical condensed matter physics is the right course.
Respondent: Sandesh Kalantre
Note: This is a review to help you make a more informed choice about how to study for this course and/or choosing this course. While we've tried to keep it objective and complete, one must keep in mind that students have varying interests, methods of study, and the course itself changes from year to year.
