PH 542 Non-Linear Dynamics (Autumn 2017-18)

Instructor name: Punit Parmananda

Course Type: Honours / Elective

Pre-requisites: None

Course Content: Simple Harmonic oscillations, Damped oscillations, Forced oscillations, Logistic Map, Noise vs chaos, Bifurcation, Feiganbaum Constants, Dynamics in 1,2,3 dimensions, Lyapunov constants, Experimental tools for research in Non Linear Dynamics

Books: Steve Strogatz

Lectures: Lectures are extremely interactive. It was never boring. Prof expects 100 % attendance. Usually teaches from slides. But slides are just guides to the flow of the lecture. They are not notes. The prof sometimes assumes that students know things which they actually do not. He is good at getting the intuitive idea across, but sometimes it feels vague as no solid mathematical basis is established.

Assignments: Almost no assignments. Prof gives some coding assignments but they are not forced and are not considered for grading. All tutorials are discussed in the class. These are usually easy and are not considered for grading. The prof usually doesn't fail anyone. But only 1 or 2 people get AA.

Exams and Grading: Midsem 20, Quiz after midsem 20, endsem 30, presentation 20, attendance and class interaction 10. There is no quiz before midsem. For presentation, the class is divided into groups of 3 or 4 (not by student's choice). Every week, one of the groups have to present in front of the prof, TAs and the class students. Questions being asked by students contributes to the class interaction part of grading. The groups have the flexibility of choosing the topic for their presentation. The topic is not disclosed even to the prof before the presentation starts. If a group is preparing on a certain topic and another group presents it before them, then they will have to change the topic. No consideration in this regard.

Follow up Courses: No specific course is an advanced form of this course, but non linear dynamics has analogies with thermodynamics and statistical physics.

Pro-Tips: Pay attention in class. Exams will be tough but based on discussions in class. Take the  Presentations very seriously. Be ready to read from the book to get a clearer idea of what is discussed in class. Best thing is to read beforehand what is going to be taught in class. The prof will make you feel like a genius in class.

Personal Comments: Prof had a preference for people with grade 7.

Note: This is a review to help you make a more informed choice about how to study for this course and/or choosing this course. While we've tried to keep it objective and complete, one must keep in mind that students have varying interests, methods of study, and the course itself changes from year to year.
