PH505 Introduction to Nuclear and Particle Physics ( 2018-2019 )

Instructor: Sadhana Dash

Course Name: Introduction to Nuclear and Particle Physics ( PH505 )

Course Type: Theory ( Core )

Credits: 6

Prerequisites:
Classical scattering theory, perturbation theory, electromagnetism

Course Content:
Nuclear structure, Shell model, inter-nucleon forces, Scattering theory, Classification of Elementary Particles, Forces and Force carriers, Symmetries in nature

Books/Other Resources:
Nuclear Physics by Kenneth Krane, Elementary Particle Physics by David Griffiths

Alexander Belyaeev's site at the University of Southampton

Lectures/Tutorials:
Primarily blackboard-based. There were some slides uploaded for deuteron theory.

There were very few tutorials which were solved in class

Pro tip:
There are no formula sheets, so you're not going to remember everything unless you work through it once on your own, especially derivations

Advanced follow-up courses ( Courses that can be taken after this course ):
Methods in Experimental and Particle Physics, Elementary Particle Physics
