Course Content:  The aim of the first half of the course was to introduce students to as many genres and writing styles as possible. There were plenty of short stories to read as well as a couple of poems and a graphic novel. The emphasis was on understanding ,interpretation and literary devices.

In the second half of the course, the prof explored (in reasonable depth) the key features of a few genres (detective fiction, fairytales etc). The prof spent a lot of time discussing the characteristics of particular genres without concrete examples. More short stories and poems followed with the emphasis being on understanding, interpretation and recognizing the genre related elements of a story .
